MELATONIN IMPLANTS for CATS

DERMATONIN IMPLANT FOR CATS

Melatonin acts as a natural, reversible suppressor of the estrus (heat) cycle in female cats by simulating short-day sunlight conditions, effectively delaying or inhibiting breeding

Dermatonin (melatonin implant) is A long-acting subcutaneous implants (approx. 18 mg AND 24 mg) to control, rather than enhance, reproduction, often lasting 2–4 months.

  • Mechanism: Cats are long-day breeders; high melatonin levels (simulating short days/winter) inhibit the, hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis and suppress ovarian activity.
  • Effectiveness: Studies show that melatonin implants are a safe, temporary, and effective alternative for non-surgical reproductive control.
  • Application: Small implant placed near the belly button area or between the shoulder blades.
  • Uses: It is used to delay or manage the "heat" cycle, reducing unwanted behaviors associated with estrus.
  • Considerations: While generally safe with few side effects reported, it is primarily used for short-term estrus suppression.

 Cat breeders

Primarily use melatonin (Dermatonin) as a reversible, non-surgical method to manage the reproductive cycles of female cats (queens)

. Because cats are "long-day breeders," their heat cycles are triggered by increasing daylight; melatonin mimics the "short days" of winter to suppress these cycles.

Key Uses for Breeders

  • Estrus (Heat) Suppression: It is used to temporarily delay or stop heat cycles, allowing breeders to control the timing and frequency of litters without permanent sterilization.
  • Show Competition: Purebred cats can be kept "entire" (un-spayed) for Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) championship eligibility while suppressing the vocalizing and restlessness associated with heat.
  • Male Management: In tomcats, it may be used to temporarily reduce sexual behaviors such as urine marking and aggression.

Administration & Methods

  • Subcutaneous Melatonin Implants (Dermatonin): A common veterinary approach involves melatonin implants placed under the skin. These are designed to suppress estrus for a period of time.
  • Reversibility: Melatonin implants are considered reversible, and cats typically return to their normal reproductive cycle once the effects wear off.

Key Considerations for Male Cats

Male cats generally react to melatonin with increased drowsiness and sedation, as it is often used for anxiety or sleep disorders. While typically safe for neutered cats, it can lower semen quality and decrease testosterone in intact toms, acting as a potential reproductive regulator. Potential side effects include mild digestive upset, changes in appetite, or disorientation. National Institutes of Health (NIH) | (.gov) +5

Sedation/Calming: The primary effect is reduced alertness and drowsiness, which can be useful for reducing anxiety or managing sleep-wake cycles.

  • Reproductive Effects: In intact male cats (toms), melatonin can significantly decrease semen quality, including reduced sperm concentration and motility.
  • Safety & Dosage: While generally safe, always consult a veterinarian for the correct dosage. Avoid supplements containing Xylitol or other toxic ingredients.
  • Side Effects: Rarely, cats may experience vomiting, diarrhea, or changes in appetite.

Health Considerations: Cats with pre-existing chronic conditions, such as diabetes or respiratory issues, should only take melatonin
